Baker Hughes: B2B Energy Innovator of the Year at CHARGE Awards

We caught up with Baker Hughes, post winning the best B2B Energy Innovator of the Year at this year’s CHARGE Awards held in Lisbon, Portugal to find out more.

  1. How does Baker Hughes view the role of innovation within its overall business strategy?

Innovation is at the forefront of everything we do and aligns with our three key pillars: transforming the core, driving profitable growth, and delivering results in new energy.

Baker Hughes develops and delivers end-to-end technology solutions in key areas across the energy value chain, using engineering, science, and data to redefine what’s possible in the context of the energy trilemma of sustainability, security and affordability. To meet the global energy demands of today and the future, a variety of efficient processes, innovative technologies, and commercially viable energy sources are needed as the world moves toward a low-carbon energy system.

  1. What does it mean to be recognized as “B2B Energy Innovator of the Year,” and how does this honor align with your business values?

Being recognized as an “B2B Innovator of the Year” exemplifies our vision and strategy. As an energy technology company, we build technology for progress—taking the power of engineering, science, and data to redefine what’s possible. Industrial and digital technology leadership is at the core of who we are. Our innovations reduce the carbon intensity of oil and gas operations today and create new energy solutions for the future. As the only end-to-end solutions energy technology company, we use our scale, portfolio, and expertise to spark innovation, unlock value, and create opportunities across industries and markets. Our strategy is focused on transforming our core to strengthen our competitiveness today, while investing for growth and positioning for new frontiers in the energy transition.

  1. Can you share any recent innovations or projects that reflect Baker Hughes’ commitment to advancing the industry?

Recently, we announced an agreement with Repsol to collaboratively develop and deploy next-generation artificial intelligence capabilities through the Leucipa™ automated field production solution. Through this strategic collaboration, AI-powered automation workflows will be developed and implemented throughout Repsol’s assets around the globe to unlock new operational capabilities. This collaboration will leverage the shared knowledge, best practices and technical expertise of both companies to optimize production, improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

Baker Hughes was also awarded a contract from Snam, Europe’s leading operator in natural gas transportation, storage and regasification, to provide three NovaLT™12 gas turbine driven compressor trains for a new gas compressor station in Sulmona (Italy). The adoption of Baker Hughes NovaLT12 turbines, which provide the option to run on 100% natural gas or hydrogen blends up to 10%, represents a significant milestone in decarbonizing the Italian gas network infrastructure and aligns with Snam’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality on direct emissions by 2040.

Our energy technology helps the industry advance on the path to net-zero and a sustainable energy future.

  1. How does Baker Hughes foster a culture of innovation across different teams and departments?

At Baker Hughes, our people are central contributors to our purpose of taking energy forward. As an energy technology company with operations around the world, we believe that a diverse workforce is critical to our success, and we aim to attract the best and most diverse talent to support the energy transition.

We strive to be an inclusive and safe workplace, with opportunities for our employees to grow and develop in their careers, supported by learning and development opportunities, competitive compensation, benefits, health and wellness programs, and by programs that build connections between our employees and their communities. As of Dec. 31, 2023, we have approximately 58,000 employees. More than 45,000 of our employees work outside the U.S., in over 85 countries with more than 155 nationalities represented. This diversity of global perspectives makes our company stronger, more resilient, and more responsive to our global customers. We’re shaping the future of the energy industry, and that future belongs to all of us. We believe unique ideas and perspectives fuel innovation and our differences make us stronger.

  1. What’s next for Baker Hughes in terms of innovation, and how will you continue to drive change in the B2B energy market?

With the breadth and depth of our portfolio, leading technologies, and unique partnership models, we are positioned to deliver outcome-based solutions across the energy and industrial markets. By integrating health, safety and environment (HSE) into everything we do, we protect our people, customers, and the environment. The oil and gas macroeconomic environment continues to be complex. While we believe that the world’s reliance on hydrocarbons will not disappear, and that oil and gas will remain relevant in meeting global energy demand, we also acknowledge the need to transition to new energy sources. Over the last several years, this transition has progressed, with governments and society focused on a long-term goal of net-zero emissions while trying to balance the energy trilemma of security, sustainability, and affordability. There is a growing consensus that the energy transition will take longer than many expected, due to the energy trilemma. We believe the industry is going through a transformation that requires a change in how we work—with our existing and new customers expecting new partnerships, commercial models, and technology solutions to deliver sustainable productivity improvements and leverage economies of scale with a lower carbon footprint. That is why our strategy is focused on improving our core competitiveness and delivering higher-productivity solutions today, while positioning ourselves to lead the energy transition and solving the energy trilemma. Our unique portfolio is expected to benefit regardless of how quickly the energy transition develops. We must embrace and energize change within our own transition journeys to propel energy and industry towards a more sustainable, efficient, and innovative future.
