Repositioning Geothermal: A Rising Star’s Perspective

Geothermal is rapidly shifting from niche to necessary and Nour Ghadanfar is helping lead that change. As Chief of Staff at Fervo Energy, she plays a key role in translating complex technical progress into a clear, compelling narrative that positions geothermal as a scalable, 24/7 clean energy solution.

In this interview, Nour shares how perception is changing, why convening matters, and the role of storytelling in scaling breakthrough technologies.

You’ve helped reposition geothermal as a ready, scalable 24/7 clean energy solution. How do you change perception for a technology long seen as “niche”?

Speaking as a representative of Fervo Energy, the advancements the company’s been able to make from a technical, commercial, and even policy standpoint have been monumental in changing that perception:

  • Whereas traditional geothermal has been limited geographically, enhanced geothermal systems enable access to the earth’s heat effectively anywhereshifting the constraint from geology to engineering, which can be scaled, enabling the move from niche to mainstream.

  • In 2023, Fervo successfully completed a commercial pilot with Google, and in 2024 announced the largest geothermal PPA in history with Southern California Edison milestones that elevate the entire category and demonstrate what geothermal is capable of.

  • Geothermal was one of the few renewable resources fully preserved under the One Big Beautiful Bill, maintaining investment and production tax credits through 2034 sending a strong signal that geothermal is credible, strategic, and backed by bipartisan support.

When you have momentum like that on the ground, it’s easy to put forth a narrative that changes perceptions because we have so much backing it up.

Through initiatives like Cape Connect and the Geothermal Sustainable Development Pact, you’ve elevated geothermal’s industry profile. What role does convening play in modern energy branding?

It plays an enormous role, especially when you’re in the hardtech space. When you can point to steel in the ground and highlight specific initiatives like Fervo’s geothermal apprenticeship program, you’re able to give your brand something concrete it can hold on to, especially if people can see it firsthand for themselves. This convening brings people into the conversation and utilizes their feedback to adjust the way we position the company. That back and forth is super important for relationship building and building trust in a brand.

Working closely with the CEO of Fervo, you translate complex operational progress into compelling narratives. How important is executive storytelling in scaling breakthrough technologies?

I’m in the lucky position where I’m able to work with both the CEO and Co-founder of Fervo. Founder-CEOs are unique because they’ve been with the company since the beginning and breathed life into something that was effectively an idea in their head. No one understands what it has taken to grow and scale a company better than a Founder-CEO, and thus the storytelling capability of this executive becomes that much more important, translating complex operational achievements into a clear, compelling narrative that inspires employees, builds investor confidence, and earns the trust of partners and policymakers.

For breakthrough technologies especially, where the path isn’t always linear and the stakes are high, strong executive storytelling aligns stakeholders around both the mission and the momentum needed to scale.

Geothermal has historically struggled for visibility. What strategic shifts are required to move it from background player to central pillar of the energy transition?

Deploy, deploy, deploy. We’re living through an unprecedented surge in power demand. In moments like this, it can be tempting to sideline carbon-free energy in favor of sources that appear faster to build. However, geothermal stands apart because of its 24/7 always-on, carbon-free nature, and Fervo has proven that we can build just as quickly.

The more megawatts of geothermal we bring online, the clearer its impact becomes. Every project strengthens grid reliability, enhances energy security, and proves that clean power can be dependable at scale. With sustained deployment, geothermal won’t just support the grid but can become a backbone of the U.S. energy system. That’s main character energy for sure.

As a Rising Star operating at the intersection of strategy, operations, and communications, how do you ensure brand, mission, and execution stay aligned during rapid growth?

That’s a tough one. Overcommunication feels cliché but is true. Holding your mission at the core of everything that you do is also very important. It is from that mission that your brand and the way you execute will grow!
