Designing Clarity: How UX Transforms Sustainability from Obligation to Leadership

What does it take to turn complex sustainability initiatives into something people actually understand and act on?

In this interview, we chat with Addie Moore, to explore how thoughtful UX and digital design can elevate sustainability beyond compliance, transforming it into a powerful leadership tool. From simplifying the circular economy of solar to building trust through aesthetic clarity, this conversation reveals how creativity, strategy, and human-centered design come together to make technical information accessible, engaging, and impactful.

1. You transformed Solarrecycle.org into a clearer, more compelling digital platform. How can UX and digital design elevate sustainability from compliance to leadership?

Collaborating with the SEIA Design team on this redesign was truly inspiring. Working alongside such a creative, unified group, we crafted energy branding that transforms complex information into clear, engaging stories that build trust and spark curiosity. Thoughtful UX and digital design breathe life into even the most technical subjects, like the circular economy of solar, making them accessible and meaningful. When design is both beautiful and intuitive, it turns a simple tool into a trusted resource, helping organizations shine as purposeful leaders rather than just meeting requirements.

2. Recycling and circularity can be complex topics. What principles guide you when translating technical sustainability initiatives into intuitive brand experiences?

On projects like this, I collaborate hand-in-hand with subject matter experts who live and breathe the content. While I help shape the language to be inviting, my main focus is designing pathways that make information effortless to explore. Through visual cues, clear hierarchy, and intuitive navigation, I meet users at their level and invite them to dive deeper at their own pace. My goal is to turn confusion into clarity, empowering users to take meaningful action.

3. You’ve blended creative excellence with strategic execution. How important is aesthetic clarity in building trust within the clean energy industry?

Aesthetic clarity is the bedrock of trust, no matter the industry. When people encounter content as vital as energy, they instinctively search for signs of credibility and care. In a field where technical details carry real-world impact, every polished detail matters. When design achieves both beauty and function, it signals that an organization is not only capable but also deeply thoughtful and reliable.

4. As a Rising Star, how do you see digital platforms shaping the future narrative of solar — particularly around responsible end-of-life management?

Digital platforms are shaping the way we interact with the world, and the energy sector relies on these tools to share knowledge. They transform information into something users can grasp and act on, while making the process transparent. By opening doors to the circular economy, digital tools empower people to find end-of-life solutions and ensure valuable materials find new life.

5. Your background as an artist and educator influences your leadership style. How does creativity strengthen strategic thinking in energy branding?

Tapping into creativity lets me see technical content from unexpected angles, revealing patterns and connections that might be hidden to those immersed in the details. My varied background helps me approach energy branding with a fresh perspective, distinguishing what matters most for everyday users. As an educator, I prioritize accessibility and clarity, ensuring my designs invite understanding. Creativity is problem-solving at its core, keeping me nimble and making my work effective.
